| Sales Tax To Pay or Not to Pay |

If I order items for my business on the Internet or by catalog, and have them shipped to my business, do I need to pay sales tax? That depends If the retailer you purchase from is located outside of your state and they do not have any other type of physical representation in your state, the state cannot collect the sales tax. Rather, you, the purchaser, are responsible for remitting the ''use tax'' directly to the state where your business is located. Of course this only applies to items that are deemed taxable by your state law. Each state taxes items differently, so make sure you know your local tax laws before mistakenly paying tax on items you shouldn't have. On the other hand, if the retailer you purchase from is located within the same state as your business, that retailer is responsible for collecting the sales tax. As a result your business does not need to remit any sales taxes directly to the state since it was already collected at the time you made your purchase. |
